...Seeing Robert Downey Jr's Sherlock Holmes (which I loved! and which has had me humming The Rocky Road to Dublin ever since) has got me happily absorbed in re-reading Holmes' exploits again... and inspired this picture...

.....................

...and somewhere under the hail,
the earth lies breathing...
~ Mark Ball.

Frosts and little blizzards have been visiting us here in Liverpool as I sketched this one, and a few weeks ago, huge snow flurries fell, burying the city for a time in a carpet of white...

Which set me to remembering this most poignant and enchanting Raymond Briggs tale...

'That winter brought the heaviest snow I'd ever seen. The snow fell...steadily all through the night. And... when I woke up...the room was filled with light and... silence. And I knew then... it was to be a magical day...'

...and thinking of the warm, delicate breath of Spring, and the fragility and bravery of new love...

the first of all my dreams was of
a lover and his only love,
strolling slowly (mind in mind)
through some green mysterious land

until my second dream begins—
the sky is wild with leaves; which dance
and dancing swoop (and swooping whirl
over a frightened boy and girl)

but that mere fury soon became
silence: in hunger always whom
two tiny selves sleep(doll by doll)
motionless under magical
foreverfully falling snow

And then this dreamer wept:and so
she quickly dreamed a dream of spring
—how you and i are blossoming

Very nice! Good use of the color! I always like all of the random clutter. Are those supposed to be random evidence from the stories?

Hey Dan - welcome back from your travels! Did you have a great time?

Thankyou! Yup, some of them are just random things I thought Holmes would have in his study, the others are directly from the stories - I labelled them with notes on Flickr: [link] but you can't do that here on DA :(

Oh yes. That was probably the best month ever. It's painful coming back to the states. haha.

OH! Very clever! That's a good idea. I wish you could do stuff like that on here.

I just read this story. (The "dancing men" at the bottom is a nice touch!)
